Morocco managed to defeat Portugal 1-0 at the Al-Thumama stadium in Al Thumama, Qatar to advance to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
Portugal would start the game off with Cristiano Ronaldo as a sub again. When coach Fernando Santos made this move last game, the score was 5-1 before Ronaldo came on. This was not the case in this match. When Ronaldo was subbed on in the 51st minute, Morocco already had a 1-0 lead.
Morocco had pulled ahead in the closing stages of the first half. Youssef En-Nesyri headed a cross into an open goal as keeper Diogo Costa tried to catch the incoming cross but mistimed it as he would arrive for the ball behind En-Nesyri.
Portugal would have a couple of nice chances but, in the end, they would spend most of the second half looping the ball into Morocco’s box, hoping that one of their players or a deflection would get them a tie.
Morocco would park the bus and did well to ensure that Portugal’s chances were never a threat. Morocco played well and had a couple of chances to go up by another goal, but luckily the one was all they needed.
Morocco is now onto the semi-finals where they will play the winner of the England vs. France game, which will take place later today at 2 pm EST.
