Chile vs. Uruguay
Chile become the second team to qualify for the knockout stage, thanks to their 1-1 tie against Uruguay on Monday June 21, 2021, at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá, Brazil. In the fast paced, end-to-end game, Chile would score first in the 26th minute. Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas would get the ball on the right side of the field, dribble into the box and from a difficult angle shoot across goal and into the left side, hitting the side netting.
Later in the second half, after an incoming corner, Chilean Arturo Vidal would get his leg to the ball first and unfortunately deflect the ball straight up into the roof of the goal, giving Uruguay the tying goal. From then on, Chile would be playing for the tie, as they knew this result would put them through to the knockout stage.
Argentina vs. Paraguay
In the last Copa América match on Monday, June 21, 2021, Argentina defeat Paraguay 1-0 at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasilia, Brazil, and become the third team to qualify for the quarterfinals. Alejandro (Papu) Gómez would score the only goal in the 10th minute of the match. A nice through ball from Ángel Di María sets up Gómez for an easy chip past the Paraguayan keeper Antony Silva.
This would be another rough game as there were a total 34 fouls called, 23 of which, were called against Paraguay. For the second time in a row this tournament, Argentina would end the game with almost exactly half as many recorded fouls.
Argentina would control the first half, but did not have too many threatening chances. Paraguay would do well to shut out Argentina in the second half, only allowing them one or two shots the entire half.
Paraguay’s weakness was that they only knew how to attack down the left side of the field. Once they would recover the ball, they would instinctually pass it to their winger Miguel Almirón, and hope that he could use his speed to get down to the corner and make a cross into the box. The one time that they tried to attack down the middle ended up being their best chance, as they would win a freekick right outside of the box towards the end of the second half.
