England vs Germany
Southgate put Jack Grealish on late in the second half, which resulted in two late goals for England as they upset Germany today at Wembley Stadium in London. The game was pretty even throughout although Germany would end up having more possession. Both teams had chances earlier in the game, but a great slide tackle and a great save would keep those out.
German striker Kai Havertz would volley the ball from outside the box which would take an acrobatic save from Jordan Pickford to deny Germany the lead. English striker Harry Kane would have a chance to score early as well, but a perfect slide from defender Mats Hummels cleared the ball just in time.
England found the back of the net in the 75th minute as a perfect cross from midfielder Luke Shaw allowed teammate Raheem Sterling to tap in the ball from inside the six-yard box.
Germany had the chance to tie the game when a through ball from Kai Havertz landed at the feet of Thomas Müller, and left him one-on-one with the keeper, but he would place the ball wide of the target.
11 minutes later, England would put an end to Germany’s dreams of advancing when substitute Jack Grealish played a great cross into Harry Kane, who was able to head the ball in from inside the six-yard box.
This was an uncharacteristic game from England as both of their goals would come from the run of play. They are known more for scoring off of set pieces. This is also their first game of the tournament where they have won by more than a one goal margin.
This win means that England are now into the Quarterfinals, where they will play Ukraine.
Sweden vs. Ukraine
A goal in the 121st minute give Ukraine the 2-1 win over Sweden today at Hampden Park in Glasgow. The game was a close as it could get with both teams scoring in the first half. Ukrainian midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko scored first in the 27th minute with a powerful volley from inside the box that would go through the keeper and bounce into the far upper right corner of the goal.
Swedish striker Emil Forsberg evened the score just before half with a hard left-footed shot that, with the help of a small deflection, ended up in the left side of the goal.
The rest of the game was mostly played in the middle and would eventually need extra time to decide the game. Nine minutes into the first half of extra time, Swedish player Marcus Danielson was sent off after an incredibly rough slide tackle that fortunately did not break the Ukrainian’s leg.
The game seemed like it would go to penalties as more players were getting cramps than chances to score. But, in the last minute of the game, Zinchenko crossed the ball into the box which found Artem Dovbyk who, in an almost identical fashion to Harry Kane, headed the ball into the right side of the goal to give Ukraine the win.
This win means that Ukraine are now into the Quarterfinals, where they will play England.
