FIFA World Cup 2022: Group G Breakdown and Predictions

Brazil is the clear favorite to win this group. The Seleção (Portuguese for ‘the selection’) are trying to make this their sixth World Cup win and keep their title as the winningest team in World Cup history. This will also be the last world cup for many of their star players, most notably Neymar. Considered one of the best current players in the world as well as historically among the best Brazilians to play the game, he is looking to get his first win and bring Brazil back to the top of soccer.

Group G and players to watch

  1. Brazil ranked 1st
    • Alisson (Liverpool)
    • Eder Militao (Real Madrid)
    • Casemiro (Manchester United)
    • Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspurs)
    • Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)
  2. Serbia ranked 21st
    • Aleksandr Mitrovic (Fulham)
    • Dusan Tadic (Ajax)
    • Dusan Vlahovic (Juventus)
    • Sergej Milinkovic Savic (Lazio)
  3. Switzerland ranked 15th
    • Yann Sommer (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
    • Xherdan Shaqiri (Chicago Fire)
    • Granit Xhaka (Arsenal)
    • Haris Seferovic (Galatasaray)
  4. Cameroon ranked 43rd
    • Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (Bayern Munich)
    • Vincent Aboubakar (Al Nassr)

Brazil should win the group as well as make it far in the tournament. They have world-class players in every position and are number one in the current FIFA Ranking. They made it to the finals of Copa América where they would fall 0-1 to age-old rivals Argentina at the Maracanã. I position Brazil as one of the favorites to win the entire Cup.

The Swiss are the second favorites to make it out of the group. Proving their skill at the 2020 Euros, they were able to beat the current World Cup Champions, France, and make it to the quarterfinals, where they would lose 3-1 to Spain on penalties. Known for their stamina and physicality I think they should have no problem advancing to the knockout stages.

I give Cameroon a shot at upsetting the pundits and making it out of the group. Their best finish in their tournament history so far was back in 1990, when they made it to the quarterfinals. Now back on the world stage after failing to qualify in 2018, their best shot is beating or tying Serbia and Switzerland.

Serbia is relatively new to the cup, only officially participating as Serbia in 2010. However, they did finish in fourth place back in 1962 when they were a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Modern Serbia has never made it out of the group stage and is looking to improve their record this time around.
