The 96th season of La Liga is off to an interesting start as nine teams have played two games, 10 teams have only played one game, and Osasuna, who will play their season opener on Monday, August 24, against Levante.
Here are my reactions to the start of the 2026-27 season.
Barcelona opened their season with a penalty and are already making their mark in the goal-scoring department. It was about as obvious a penalty as there could be. Raphinha put it away and scored again later to get his first two goals of the season.
New signings Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon are off to a great start with Adeyemi scoring and Gordon providing two assists.
Lamine Yamal, on the other hand, is continuing his form from the World Cup and had announcers wondering if he is starting to burn out given his heavy workload this past year.
Real Madrid started their season with a win but need to work on their form. They have a lot of new players and José Mourinho has his work cut out in figuring out how to get everyone on the same page. Their game lacks cohesiveness. They lucked out with their last-second win.
Atlético Madrid start off with a 2-0 win and a 2-2 tie plus their first red card of the season. Kang-in Lee scored a great curler on his debut to show he was worth the initial €35 million fee. Their red card vs. Villarreal was a bit harsh in my opinion. Although the extended-arm push was clearly a foul and deserving of a yellow, a red card was excessive.
Elche, for the 60-70 minutes that they were competitive against Barcelona, they did better than what the final scoreline reads. Elche, although they conceded five goals, were playing well in the first half. Luck was not on their side as they had a couple of one-on-one chances that got away from them as well as two shots that hit the post after leaving the goalkeeper frozen.
Deportivo Alavés is off to a good start with a combined four points in their first two matches. Although it has only been two games, they look to have made improvements to their attacking game, with former Real Madrid player Mariano Díaz being their player to watch.
